Team building
Team building is the use of activities and practices intended to strengthen working relationships and coordination among members of a group.
Psychological safety: A shared belief that people can take interpersonal risks without fear of humiliation or punishment. Open discussion and admitting mistakes become possible when team activities support interpersonal safety.
Team training: Instruction and practice designed to improve a team’s knowledge, skills, and coordinated performance. It targets work-relevant competencies more directly than general social activities.
Team development: The ongoing process through which a team improves its structure, relationships, and ability to perform. Team building is one possible intervention within this broader, longer-term process.
Team performance: The quality and quantity of outcomes produced by a team over a defined period. Performance is a frequent intended outcome, but social activities do not automatically improve it.
Team cohesion: The forces that bind a group together and sustain members’ commitment to it. Shared challenges and rituals can strengthen members’ attachment to their team.
Experiential learning: Learning through purposeful experience, reflection, and applying insights to later situations. Activities become useful when teams connect their experience to workplace behavior.
Team effectiveness: The extent to which a team achieves its goals while sustaining its capacity to work together. Improved relationships matter only insofar as they support effective collective work.
Employee engagement: The degree of employees’ involvement, energy, and investment in their work. Stronger workplace relationships can contribute to engagement, alongside other organizational conditions.
Team communication: The exchange of information and meaning among members working toward shared goals. Many team-building exercises practice clearer information exchange and active listening.
Outdoor education: Structured learning in outdoor settings through direct experience and reflection. Outdoor challenges are a recognizable format for experiential team-building programs.
