Technicolor

Technicolor is a class of theories in which a new strong interaction forms a condensate that breaks electroweak symmetry, without an elementary Higgs field.

Chiral symmetry breaking: A spontaneous breaking of a symmetry relating left- and right-handed fermions, typically accompanied by condensate formation. Technicolor adapts this familiar strong-dynamics mechanism to break electroweak symmetry.
Gauge theory: A field theory in which local symmetries determine interactions mediated by gauge fields. Technicolor is formulated as a new gauge interaction with its own force carriers.
Leonard Susskind: A theoretical physicist who helped develop modern particle physics and proposed technicolor independently. His 1979 proposal helped establish technicolor as a dynamical alternative to an elementary Higgs field.
Elementary Higgs boson: A fundamental spin-zero particle associated with the scalar field responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking in the Standard Model. Technicolor rejects the need for this field as the source of symmetry breaking.
Technifermion condensate: A vacuum expectation value of a technifermion bilinear formed by the technicolor interaction. This condensate plays the role of the order parameter that gives the W and Z bosons mass.
Quantum chromodynamics: The gauge theory of quarks and gluons that describes the strong interaction. Its confinement and chiral symmetry breaking inspired technicolor's proposed dynamics.
Steven Weinberg: A theoretical physicist whose work helped establish the Standard Model and electroweak theory. Weinberg independently introduced the technicolor idea in 1976.
Supersymmetry: A proposed symmetry relating bosons and fermions, often used to address the Higgs mass hierarchy problem. It offers a different route to stabilizing electroweak physics while retaining fundamental scalar fields.
Technipion: A pseudo-Nambu–Goldstone boson arising when technifermion chiral symmetries are spontaneously broken. Technipions are the characteristic composite states associated with technicolor symmetry breaking.
Standard Model: The quantum field theory describing known elementary particles and three of their fundamental interactions. Technicolor seeks to extend its particle content and explain its electroweak symmetry-breaking sector.
