Tefillin

Tefillin are small leather boxes containing passages from the Torah, worn on the arm and head during weekday morning prayers. Their straps bind scriptural words to the body as a Jewish religious practice.

Shema: A central Jewish prayer beginning with the declaration that God is one. Two passages recited in the Shema are written inside the tefillin.
Shel yad: The tefillin box and strap worn on the upper arm. Its strap is wound toward the hand after the box is positioned on the arm.
Deuteronomy: The fifth book of the Hebrew Bible, containing laws and teachings attributed to Moses. Its passages include commands to bind words as a sign on hand and head.
Phylacteries: A traditional English name for Jewish tefillin, derived from a Greek word associated with protection. The label can suggest an amulet, while Jewish practice centers on commandments and prayer.
Mezuzah: A parchment bearing biblical passages, placed in a case on a Jewish doorway. Like tefillin, it contains passages commanding their inscription as a sign.
Shel rosh: The tefillin worn on the head, with a box divided into four compartments. Its separate compartments hold the four passages on individual parchments.
Exodus: The biblical account of Israel's departure from Egypt and covenant at Sinai. Its commandments supply two of the passages written in tefillin.
Samaritan mezuzah: A Samaritan inscription containing scriptural text, traditionally placed at a home entrance. It reflects a related scriptural-sign practice without reproducing Jewish tefillin.
Torah: The foundational Jewish teaching, especially the Five Books of Moses. Tefillin contain selected passages from the Torah.
Tallit: A Jewish prayer shawl with fringes on its corners. Tefillin are commonly put on during morning prayers, often alongside the tallit.
