Telecommunications engineering designs, builds, and maintains systems that transmit information through wired, wireless, optical, and satellite networks.

Modulation: The process of varying a carrier signal to encode information for transmission. It adapts information-bearing signals for passage through a communication channel.
Electromagnetic wave: A wave of coupled electric and magnetic fields that transports energy through space. Wireless links rely on electromagnetic waves to carry signals without a physical conductor.
Mobile network: A wireless telecommunications network that connects mobile devices through radio access and core infrastructure. It combines radio design, handover, and network management for moving users.
Circuit switching: A communication method that reserves a dedicated path between endpoints for the duration of a session. It contrasts with packet switching, which shares network resources dynamically.

Packet switching: A method that divides data into packets forwarded independently through a shared network. It is the dominant alternative to dedicated circuit paths in data networks.
Multiplexing: The technique of combining multiple signals for transmission over a shared communication medium. It lets network infrastructure carry several information streams on the same resource.
Transmission line: A structure that guides electromagnetic energy between points, such as a coaxial cable or microstrip. Its electrical properties affect signals traveling through wired equipment and networks.
