Telecommunications

Telecommunications is the transmission of information across distance using electrical, radio, or optical signals. It connects people and systems through networks of wired and wireless links.

Modulation: Modulation varies a carrier signal to encode information for transmission. It places information onto signals that can travel through radio, cable, or optical channels.
Optical fiber: Optical fiber is a thin glass or plastic strand that guides light signals. It carries high-capacity telecommunications traffic over long distances with low signal loss.
Telephone: A telephone is a device or service for transmitting speech between distant users. Telephony is a foundational telecommunications service, now delivered over both circuit and packet networks.
Telegraphy: Telegraphy transmits coded messages over distance using electrical or other signaling systems. The electric telegraph established rapid long-distance communication before voice telephony.
Postal system: A postal system transports physical messages and parcels through organized delivery networks. Unlike telecommunications, it moves physical objects rather than signals and usually delivers messages less immediately.
Multiplexing: Multiplexing combines multiple signals for transmission over a shared channel. It lets telecommunications systems carry many conversations or data streams on limited infrastructure.
Coaxial cable: Coaxial cable carries electrical signals through a central conductor surrounded by insulation and shielding. It supports cable television and broadband access using a shielded wired medium.
Internet: The Internet is a global network of interconnected computer networks that communicate using shared protocols. It carries web pages, messages, voice, video, and other digital services over telecommunications links.
Samuel Morse: Samuel Morse was an American inventor associated with the electric telegraph and Morse code. His telegraph system helped make long-distance electrical messaging commercially practical.
Circuit switching: Circuit switching reserves a dedicated communication path for the duration of a connection. It contrasts with packet-based approaches by assigning capacity to a continuous end-to-end circuit.
