Telegraphy

Telegraphy transmits coded messages over distance through signaling systems. Its methods include optical relays, electrical circuits, and wireless radio.

Morse code: A code that represents letters and numerals as sequences of dots and dashes. It converts text into timed signal patterns used by electrical and wireless telegraphy.
Optical telegraph: A system that transmits messages using visible signals from towers or other elevated stations. It established long-distance coded signaling before practical electrical telegraphy.
Railway signalling: Systems that communicate train movements and control safe access to railway tracks. Telegraphy let railway stations coordinate train movements over long distances.
Telephone: A telecommunications device that transmits and receives spoken sound over distance. Unlike telegraphy’s coded signals, telephone systems convey speech directly.
Time standardization: The coordination of clocks and time conventions across regions or institutions. Telegraph signals helped synchronize distant clocks and supported standardized time zones.
Telegraph key: A hand-operated switch that opens and closes an electrical circuit to send telegraph signals. Its presses create the signal durations used to transmit Morse code.
Semaphore line: A chain of stations that communicates through movable arms or panels visible from the next station. Claude Chappe’s French network became a prominent optical telegraph system.
Submarine communications cable: An undersea cable designed to carry telecommunications signals between distant shores. Submarine telegraph cables connected continents before telephone and internet traffic.
Teleprinter: An electromechanical terminal that sends and receives typed text over communications circuits. It automated text entry and reception where telegraphy often relied on Morse and operators.
News agency: An organization that gathers and distributes news to media outlets and other subscribers. Telegraphy made centralized, rapid news gathering practical across wide regions.
