Telemark skiing

Telemark skiing is a downhill skiing style in which the heel can lift from the ski and turns use a characteristic lunge, with one ski advanced and the other trailing.

Telemark turn: A skiing turn made with one ski advanced and the trailing knee bent toward the snow. This lunging movement is the defining turn technique of telemark skiing.
Telemark: A county and traditional region in southern Norway. The skiing style takes its name from this region.
Backcountry skiing: Skiing in ungroomed terrain outside controlled ski areas, often reached under one's own power. Telemark gear can be used for descents in remote, ungroomed terrain.

Cross-country skiing: Skiing over varied terrain with free-heel bindings, generally emphasizing travel rather than downhill turns. Both allow heel lift, but telemark centers on controlled downhill turning.
Telemark boot: A supportive ski boot designed to flex at the forefoot while remaining secured at the toe. Boot flex and support help control a ski whose heel is not fixed down.
Morgedal: A village in Telemark, Norway, associated with the development of modern skiing. Sondre Norheim came from Morgedal, a focal point in telemark skiing's early history.
