Telemedicine is the delivery of clinical care across distance using communication technologies. It includes remote consultations, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment.

Synchronous communication: Communication in which participants exchange information in real time. Live video and audio visits let clinicians assess patients and respond immediately.
Telestroke: Remote evaluation of suspected stroke patients by specialists using telecommunications. Rapid remote specialist assessment can guide treatment at hospitals without on-site neurologists.
Access to healthcare: The ability of people to obtain appropriate health services when needed. Remote appointments can reduce travel and distance barriers for some patients.
In-person care: Healthcare delivered with the patient and clinician physically present in the same location. It permits direct examination and procedures that remote consultations cannot provide.
Telemedicine regulation: Laws and rules governing the delivery of medical care through telecommunications. Licensing, prescribing, and reimbursement rules shape which remote services clinicians can offer.
Asynchronous communication: Communication in which messages are sent and answered at different times. Store-and-forward consultations allow clinicians to review submitted records or images later.
Teleradiology: The remote interpretation and transmission of medical images. Imaging can be reviewed by radiologists who are not at the facility that acquired it.
Digital divide: Unequal access to digital technologies, connectivity, and the skills to use them. Limited devices, broadband, or digital skills can exclude people from remote care.
Hybrid care: A care model combining remote services with in-person clinical encounters. It combines remote convenience with in-person assessment when physical examination or procedures are needed.
Medical malpractice: Professional negligence by a healthcare provider that causes harm to a patient. Remote care raises questions about the standard of care when examination or follow-up is limited.
