Telemetry

Telemetry is the remote measurement and transmission of data from a monitored person to a receiving system, often for continuous observation or analysis.

Physiological monitoring: The measurement of bodily functions to assess health or detect changes. Telemetry transmits physiological measurements so they can be monitored away from the person.
Cardiac telemetry: Remote monitoring of cardiac electrical activity, usually through a wearable transmitter. It is a common clinical use of telemetry for observing heart rhythms.
Electrocardiogram: A graphical recording of the heart’s electrical activity over time. It is a central measurement transmitted in cardiac telemetry.
Ambulatory electrocardiography: The recording of heart activity while a person goes about daily activities. Some ambulatory monitors store recordings instead of transmitting them continuously.
Electrocardiography: The recording of the heart’s electrical activity using electrodes on the body. Electrocardiographic signals are commonly sent by cardiac telemetry.
Holter monitor: A portable electrocardiograph that records heart activity continuously, usually for one or more days. Unlike live telemetry, a Holter monitor typically stores data for later review.
Pulse oximetry: A noninvasive method for estimating blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate using light. Pulse oximeters can provide bodily measurements for remote transmission.
Remote sensing: The acquisition of information about an object or area without physical contact. Telemetry is a form of remote measurement, but commonly emphasizes transmitting data to a receiver.
Wireless communication: The transfer of information between devices without a wired connection. Wireless links carry measurements from wearable transmitters to receiving equipment.
Intensive care unit: A hospital unit for patients who need close observation and advanced life support. Telemetry extends physiological observation beyond the bedside equipment in critical care.
