Teleological argument

An argument for God’s existence that infers a designer from apparent purpose, order, or complexity in the world. Its forms range from appeals to biological adaptation to arguments from the universe’s laws and conditions.

Argument from design: An argument that infers an intelligent cause from features of the natural world that appear designed. This broader label covers the teleological argument’s different forms.
David Hume: A Scottish philosopher whose works include influential critiques of reasoning about God from the natural world. His objections question whether the world is sufficiently like an artifact to support design inference.
Teleology: The study or explanation of phenomena in terms of ends, purposes, or goals. The argument’s name and central intuition rely on interpreting natural features as purpose-directed.
Natural theology: The study of God through reason and observation of the natural world rather than revelation. Teleological arguments are a major form of reasoning within natural theology.
Charles Darwin: An English naturalist whose theory of evolution by natural selection transformed the study of life’s diversity. His account of adaptation challenged a central biological premise of Paley’s argument.
William Paley: An English theologian whose natural theology used the watchmaker analogy to argue for a designer. His analogy makes the inference from organized parts to a designer especially clear.
Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion: David Hume’s philosophical dialogue, published in 1779, that examines arguments for and against religious belief. Its discussion of design arguments develops Hume’s central criticisms.
Purpose: The end, aim, or function toward which an action or process is directed. The argument treats apparent functions in nature as evidence that they were intended.
Thomas Aquinas: A medieval theologian and philosopher who presented five arguments for God in the Summa Theologiae. His fifth way argues from the goal-directed behavior of natural things to an intelligent governor.
On the Origin of Species: Charles Darwin’s 1859 book presenting evidence for evolution and explaining adaptation through natural selection. It supplied a powerful natural mechanism for features once taken as direct evidence of design.
