Teleoperation

Teleoperation is the remote control of a machine by a human through a communication link. It lets an operator act at a distance while receiving information about the machine or its environment.

Human–machine interface: A system through which a person monitors or controls a machine. It translates operator actions into commands and presents remote sensor information.
Teleoperated surgery: Surgery in which a clinician controls instruments remotely, often through a robotic system. It applies teleoperation to precise work inside a patient’s body.
Robotics: The field concerned with designing, building, and operating robots. Teleoperation is one way humans control robotic systems.
Autonomous robot: A robot that performs tasks using its own sensing and decision-making without continuous human control. Autonomous action differs from commands issued continuously by a remote operator.
Feedback control: Control that adjusts a system’s actions using measurements of its behavior. Remote sensing closes the loop between machine behavior and operator commands.
Space robotics: The design and use of robots in space exploration and operations. Remote robots perform tasks where human access is difficult or hazardous.
Control theory: The mathematical study of how to influence the behavior of dynamic systems. It supplies methods for analyzing stability and performance in remote control.
Telerobotics: The remote operation of robots through communication links. Teleoperation can control machines beyond robots, while telerobotics is robot-specific.
Communication delay: The time taken for information to travel between communicating systems. Delayed commands and feedback can destabilize or slow remote operation.
Bomb disposal robot: A remotely operated robot used to inspect or handle explosive devices. It keeps explosive ordnance technicians away from immediate danger.
