Telepathy

Telepathy is the alleged direct transfer of thoughts or feelings between minds without known senses or ordinary communication. Its existence has not been established by reliable scientific evidence.

Extrasensory perception: The claimed acquisition of information without using the known senses. Telepathy is usually classified as one form of this broader claimed ability.
Society for Psychical Research: A British organization founded in 1882 to investigate claims of psychic phenomena using systematic inquiry. Its members helped establish telepathy as a subject for organized investigation.
Mentalism: A performance genre that creates the appearance of psychological or paranormal feats through theatrical methods. Mentalism can imitate telepathy's appearance without claiming a demonstrated transfer between minds.
Parapsychology: The study of alleged psychic phenomena, including extrasensory perception and psychokinesis. Telepathy is one of the central claims investigated within this research field.
Ganzfeld experiment: A laboratory procedure using uniform sensory stimulation to test claimed extrasensory perception. Researchers used it to test whether receivers could identify information sent by distant participants.
Frederic W. H. Myers: A British poet and scholar who helped found psychical research and popularize the term telepathy. Myers introduced the word in the Society for Psychical Research's early investigations.
Barnum effect: The tendency to accept vague, general descriptions as uniquely accurate accounts of oneself. It helps explain why broad statements can feel like precise access to private thoughts.
Pseudoscience: A system of claims presented as scientific without meeting the standards of reliable scientific testing. Critics use this label when telepathy claims resist rigorous, reproducible evaluation.
Remote viewing: The claimed ability to perceive distant or hidden places without ordinary sensory access. Unlike telepathy, remote viewing claims perception of locations rather than another mind's thoughts.
Spiritualism: A religious movement centered on communication with the spirits of the dead. Interest in spirit communication helped create the cultural setting for early telepathy claims.
