Television set

An electronic device that receives and displays television broadcasts or other video and audio signals. It combines a screen with circuitry for processing images and sound.

Television tuner: A circuit that selects a television channel from broadcast or cable signals. It extracts the selected channel before the set decodes its picture and sound.
Mechanical television: An early television system that used rotating mechanical devices to scan and reproduce images. Its scanning disks were among the first ways television images reached display devices.
Broadcast television: The distribution of television programs from transmitters to receivers over radio waves. Receiving broadcast programs remains a core function of many television sets.
Computer monitor: A display designed primarily to show output from a computer. Unlike many televisions, monitors traditionally omit broadcast tuners and emphasize close-range computer use.
Video decoder: Hardware or software that converts encoded video data into image frames. It reconstructs pictures from compressed video carried by broadcasts and digital inputs.
Cathode-ray tube: A vacuum tube that creates images by directing electron beams onto a phosphor-coated screen. It became the dominant display technology in television sets for much of the twentieth century.
Smart television: A television set with internet connectivity and built-in applications for streaming and other services. It extends the set from broadcast reception to networked media and apps.
Video projector: A device that projects an image onto a separate screen or surface. It creates a large image on a wall or screen rather than on an integrated panel.
Display technology: The methods and devices used to create visible images on screens. A television’s panel converts processed image data into light.
Philo Farnsworth: An American inventor who developed an early fully electronic television system. His image dissector helped establish electronic television as a practical alternative to mechanical scanning.
