Television

Television is a system for transmitting and receiving moving images and sound. It encompasses broadcast, cable, satellite, and internet-based delivery, along with the devices and formats used to present programs.

Television camera: A camera that converts a scene into electronic or digital signals for television production or transmission. It turns the original scene into picture signals that a television system can carry.
Mechanical television: An early television technology that scanned images using moving mechanical parts. Mechanical systems produced some of the first television images before electronic designs prevailed.
Cable television: Television delivery through coaxial or fiber-optic networks rather than direct over-the-air reception. Cable expanded channel capacity and brought television to places with weak broadcast reception.

Satellite television: Television delivery using communications satellites to relay signals to receiving dishes. Satellite links provide wide-area distribution, including service in remote regions.
Television audience measurement: Methods for estimating how many people watch television programs and services. Audience estimates influence advertising prices and decisions about which programs continue.
Analog television: A television system that represents picture and sound information with continuously varying signals. Its continuous signals show how television worked before digital encoding became dominant.
John Logie Baird: Scottish inventor who developed and demonstrated mechanical television systems in the 1920s. Baird’s demonstrations helped make television a public technology.
