Temple of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven is an imperial complex in Beijing where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties performed ceremonies to pray for good harvests and honor Heaven.

Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests: A circular, triple-roofed wooden hall where emperors prayed for abundant harvests. This landmark hall gives the complex its best-known setting for harvest prayers.
Ming dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 1368 to 1644. The complex was founded under Ming rule in the early fifteenth century.
Mandate of Heaven: A Chinese political doctrine that held rulers’ legitimacy depended on Heaven’s approval and just governance. Imperial ceremonies acknowledged that rulership remained accountable to Heaven.
Temple of Heaven Park: A large public park in Beijing that contains the Temple of Heaven complex. The former imperial enclosure now serves as a major urban park.
Circular Mound Altar: An open-air, tiered marble altar used for winter-solstice sacrifices to Heaven. Its concentric terraces focused the most solemn annual sacrifice.
Yongle Emperor: The third emperor of the Ming dynasty, who ruled from 1402 to 1424. He moved the capital to Beijing and began construction of the complex.
Tian: A central Chinese concept meaning Heaven, encompassing cosmic order and moral authority. The complex’s principal rites addressed Tian as the source of cosmic order.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: A place recognized by UNESCO for cultural or natural value of outstanding universal importance. The complex received World Heritage status in 1998 for its architectural and cultural significance.
Imperial Vault of Heaven: A circular, single-roofed building that housed ceremonial tablets of Heaven and other deities. Its sacred tablets were carried to the altars for imperial rites.
Qing dynasty: China’s last imperial dynasty, which ruled from 1644 to 1912. Qing emperors continued and expanded the complex’s state ceremonies.
