Tempo

Tempo is the speed at which a piece of music is performed, commonly measured in beats per minute or described with words such as allegro and adagio.

Beats per minute: Beats per minute is a measure of the number of musical beats occurring in one minute. It gives a numerical rate for a piece’s tempo.
Beat (music): A beat is a recurring pulse that listeners and performers use to organize musical time. Tempo is the rate at which these recurring pulses occur.
Adagio: Adagio is a slow tempo indication, often suggesting a broad or unhurried performance. It names one commonly used slow tempo range or character.
Dynamics (music): Dynamics are the degrees of loudness and softness in musical performance. A passage can grow louder without becoming faster.
Metronome: A metronome is a device that produces regular pulses at a set rate to help musicians keep time. Its adjustable pulse provides a practical reference for maintaining tempo.
Rhythm: Rhythm is the arrangement of sounds and silences across time. Tempo sets the speed at which rhythmic patterns unfold.
Allegro: Allegro is a musical tempo indication associated with a fast, lively performance. It exemplifies a conventional fast tempo marking.
Pitch (music): Pitch is the perceived highness or lowness of a musical sound. Changing pitch does not by itself change the speed of performance.
Tempo marking: A tempo marking is a musical instruction specifying the speed or character of a passage. It tells performers how quickly the music should move.
Meter (music): Meter is the recurring organization of beats into groups, often marked by alternating strong and weak beats. Meter groups beats, while tempo determines their rate.
