Tendon rupture

A tendon rupture is a complete tear in a tendon, the connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone. It interrupts force transfer from muscle to skeleton and can impair movement.

Tendon: A tough connective-tissue structure that transmits force from muscle to bone. A rupture is a complete disruption of this force-transmitting tissue.
Achilles tendon rupture: A complete tear of the tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It is a common major tendon rupture, often causing loss of effective push-off.
Tendon strain: An injury involving overstretched or damaged tendon fibers without complete separation. Unlike rupture, a strain preserves at least some structural continuity.
Skeletal muscle: Striated muscle tissue under voluntary control that produces movement by contracting. A ruptured tendon interrupts the force generated by its attached muscle.
Tendon repair: A procedure that reconnects torn tendon ends, usually with sutures or fixation to bone. Surgical repair is considered when restoring tendon continuity is necessary for function.
Tendon injury: Damage to a tendon, ranging from microscopic strain to partial or complete tearing. Rupture is the most severe form of structural tendon injury.
Rotator cuff tear: A partial or complete tear of one or more tendons stabilizing the shoulder. Complete rotator cuff tendon tears are a frequent cause of shoulder weakness.
Partial tendon tear: A tendon injury in which some fibers remain intact across the damaged region. The remaining fibers distinguish partial tearing from a complete rupture.
Muscle-tendon junction: The transition region where muscle fibers connect to tendon tissue. Ruptures may occur near this junction, affecting the muscle’s force pathway.
Functional rehabilitation: A staged program of movement and exercise designed to restore everyday physical abilities. Progressive rehabilitation rebuilds motion and strength while protecting healing tissue.
