Tenebrism

Tenebrism is a painting technique that sets sharply illuminated forms against extensive, deep shadow. Its concentrated light creates dramatic contrast and directs attention within a scene.

Chiaroscuro: The use of light and shadow to create volume and tonal contrast in visual art. Tenebrism intensifies chiaroscuro by concentrating light against broad areas of darkness.
The Calling of Saint Matthew: A painting by Caravaggio depicting Christ calling Matthew in a dim interior. A beam of light directs attention to the figures while much of the room remains dark.
