Tengri

Tengri is the supreme sky deity in ancient Turkic and Mongolic religions, associated with the eternal blue sky and cosmic order.

Blue Sky: The daytime sky’s blue appearance, caused mainly by atmospheric scattering of sunlight. Tengri’s title and imagery connect divine authority with the eternal blue sky.
Old Turkic inscriptions: Monumental texts in the Old Turkic script, especially those erected by early Turkic polities in Mongolia. They record Tengri as a force governing political fortune and the Turkic realm.
Tengriism: A modern umbrella term for religious traditions centered on Tengri and related beliefs among Turkic and Mongolic peoples. It names the broader religious framework often used to discuss Tengri’s worship.
Türk mythology: The body of myths and traditional narratives associated with Turkic peoples. Tengri is one divine figure within a much wider range of Turkic mythic beings and stories.
Heavenly Mandate: A doctrine that political authority depends on approval from a higher cosmic power. Tengri’s favor could legitimize a ruler’s authority and explain its loss.
Orkhon inscriptions: Eighth-century Old Turkic monuments commemorating the Göktürk rulers Kül Tigin and Bilge Qaghan. Their texts explicitly invoke Tengri in accounts of rulership, victory, and the Turkic people.

Sacred kingship: A form of rule in which a monarch’s authority is grounded in sacred status or divine sanction. Tengri linked political sovereignty to a power understood to stand above human rulers.
Göktürk Khaganate: A Turkic empire that ruled much of the eastern Eurasian steppe during the sixth and seventh centuries. Its political culture left some of the earliest prominent written evidence for Tengri worship.
