Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow is a painful tendinopathy of the forearm extensor tendons where they attach to the outer elbow. Also called lateral epicondylitis, it often causes pain during gripping or wrist extension.

Common extensor tendon: A shared tendon attaching several wrist and finger extensor muscles to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. This is the attachment site most often affected in tennis elbow.
Lateral elbow pain: Pain located around the outer side of the elbow, arising from several possible causes. Tennis elbow is a common cause, but this broader symptom has other explanations.
Radial tunnel syndrome: A syndrome of pain associated with compression or irritation of the radial nerve’s deep branch in the proximal forearm. It can mimic tennis elbow, but tenderness is often farther down the forearm.
Tendon healing: The biological process by which damaged tendon tissue is repaired and remodeled. Persistent symptoms can reflect slow remodeling rather than ongoing acute inflammation.
Extensor carpi radialis brevis: A forearm muscle that extends and abducts the wrist and commonly contributes to the common extensor tendon. Its tendon is frequently implicated in the painful attachment.
Cozen's test: A clinical maneuver that assesses lateral elbow pain while the patient resists wrist extension. It can reproduce the familiar pain during an examination for tennis elbow.
Posterior interosseous nerve syndrome: A motor nerve disorder caused by dysfunction of the posterior interosseous nerve, a deep branch of the radial nerve. Weakness without the typical tendon-localized pain points toward a different problem.
Pain science: The study of how biological, psychological, and social factors shape pain and its experience. Pain severity does not always track neatly with tendon changes or tissue damage.
Tendinopathy: A disorder of a tendon involving pain and impaired function, often associated with changes in tendon structure. Tennis elbow is understood as a tendinopathy rather than simply acute inflammation.
Physical therapy: A health profession that uses exercise and other interventions to improve movement and physical function. Progressive strengthening and functional exercise are common parts of rehabilitation.
