Tennis serve

The stroke that begins a tennis point by putting the ball into play, hit from behind the baseline into the diagonally opposite service box.

Tennis service box: A marked area of the tennis court into which a serve must land. A legal serve must land in the diagonally opposite service box.
Tennis court: The rectangular playing surface on which tennis is played. Its baseline, center mark, and service lines define the serve’s starting point and target.
First serve: The first of a player’s two permitted serves for a point. Players often use it to seek a direct advantage while managing the risk of a fault.
Underhand serve: A tennis serve struck with an upward motion from below the shoulder. It contrasts with the overhead motion most associated with conventional serving.
Tennis toss: The upward release of the ball that precedes a tennis serve. Its height and placement shape the server’s contact point and timing.
Tennis service line: A line marking the back boundary of each service box. A serve landing beyond this line is not in the service box.
Second serve: The serve attempted after a first-serve fault. It must balance reliability with enough pressure to prevent an easy return.
Serve-and-volley: A tennis tactic in which a player advances toward the net immediately after serving. It shows how serve placement can set up an immediate attacking follow-up.
Tennis grip: The way a player holds a tennis racket. Grip influences racket-face control and the spin available on serve.
Tennis baseline: The boundary line at each end of a tennis court. The server must remain behind it until striking the ball.
