Tenofovir disoproxil

Tenofovir disoproxil is an oral prodrug converted in the body to tenofovir, an antiviral nucleotide analogue used against HIV and hepatitis B virus.

Tenofovir: Tenofovir is an antiviral nucleotide analogue that inhibits reverse transcriptase and hepatitis B virus polymerase after intracellular activation. The prodrug is converted to this active antiviral molecule.
Antiretroviral therapy: Antiretroviral therapy combines medicines to suppress HIV replication and improve health. Tenofovir disoproxil is commonly paired with other antiretrovirals in HIV regimens.
Tenofovir alafenamide: Tenofovir alafenamide is a tenofovir prodrug designed to deliver the active drug to cells at lower doses. It is the newer tenofovir prodrug, generally associated with less renal and bone exposure.

Emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil: Emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil is a fixed-dose combination antiviral medicine used for HIV treatment and pre-exposure prophylaxis. This combination pairs tenofovir disoproxil with emtricitabine in common HIV regimens.
Lamivudine: Lamivudine is a nucleoside analogue used to treat HIV and chronic hepatitis B. It treats the same infections but has a distinct resistance profile and can select HBV resistance during monotherapy.
Fanconi syndrome: Fanconi syndrome is generalized dysfunction of kidney proximal tubules, causing urinary loss of phosphate, glucose, bicarbonate, and other substances. It is a severe manifestation of tenofovir-associated proximal tubular damage.
Nucleotide reverse-transcriptase inhibitor: A nucleotide reverse-transcriptase inhibitor is an antiviral drug that disrupts viral DNA synthesis by mimicking nucleotide substrates. Tenofovir disoproxil belongs to this antiretroviral drug class.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis: Pre-exposure prophylaxis is the use of antiretroviral medicines by HIV-negative people to prevent HIV acquisition. Tenofovir disoproxil with emtricitabine is an established oral option for preventing HIV.
