Terbium

Terbium is a silvery-white, malleable rare-earth metal with atomic number 65. Its compounds produce characteristic green light and support uses in phosphors, solid-state devices, and specialty alloys.

Terbium-doped phosphors: Phosphor materials containing terbium ions that emit characteristic green light when excited. Terbium’s green emission makes these phosphors useful in fluorescent lamps and display technologies.
Lanthanides: The metallic elements with atomic numbers 57 through 71, characterized by filling of the 4f electron shell. Terbium’s chemistry and many of its properties follow patterns shared across this series.
Carl Gustaf Mosander: A Swedish chemist who discovered several rare-earth elements by separating minerals into distinct fractions. Mosander identified terbium in 1843 while studying yttria from Ytterby.
Chemical element: A pure substance defined by atoms with the same number of protons in their nuclei. Terbium is the element whose atoms all contain 65 protons.

Terbium(III): The +3 oxidation state of terbium, common in its compounds and solutions. Terbium(III) ions produce the element’s characteristic green luminescence.
Ytterby: A village on the Swedish island of Resarö known for a quarry rich in rare-earth minerals. Terbium’s name, like those of several other elements, derives from this place.
Atomic number: The number of protons in an atom’s nucleus, which identifies its chemical element. The value 65 distinguishes terbium from every other element.
Rare-earth element supply chain: The mining, separation, refining, and manufacturing network that supplies rare-earth elements and products. Terbium depends on complex separation capacity after mining, not simply on ore availability.
