Terence Tao

Terence Tao is an Australian-American mathematician whose work spans harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, additive combinatorics, and number theory. He received the Fields Medal in 2006.

Green–Tao theorem: A theorem stating that the prime numbers contain arithmetic progressions of arbitrarily large finite length. Tao and Ben Green proved that primes contain progressions of every finite length.
Harmonic analysis: The study of functions and signals through their decomposition into oscillatory components, especially Fourier series and transforms. It is a foundation for Tao’s work on dispersive equations and restriction theory.
Tao–Vu inequality: An inequality bounding the smallest singular value of a random matrix with independent entries under suitable assumptions. It exemplifies Tao’s use of probability and analysis to study random matrices.

Timothy Gowers: A British mathematician known for work in functional analysis and combinatorics, and a 1998 Fields Medalist. Gowers’s work on additive combinatorics helped shape the intellectual setting of Tao’s research.
Nicolas Bourbaki: A collective pseudonym for a group of mathematicians who published influential, highly formalized mathematical texts. Bourbaki represents a collective approach unlike Tao’s highly visible individual research career.
