Terra Australis

Terra Australis was a hypothetical southern continent imagined by ancient and early modern geographers to balance the known landmasses of the Northern Hemisphere. European exploration gradually replaced the conjecture with mapped continents and oceans.

Aristotle: An ancient Greek philosopher whose writings shaped European natural philosophy and cosmology. His account of Earth’s symmetry helped support the idea of a balancing southern land.
Antichthones: An ancient Greek name for people imagined to inhabit lands opposite the known world. The idea of counterpart inhabitants reflected the same hemispheric symmetry behind Terra Australis.
Abraham Ortelius: A Flemish cartographer whose 1570 Theatrum Orbis Terrarum became a landmark atlas. His maps gave Terra Australis wide circulation among European readers.

Australia: A country and continent occupying the Australian mainland and nearby islands. Its name derives from the Latin australis, though the continent is not the imagined Terra Australis.
Crates of Mallus: A second-century BCE Greek grammarian and geographer known for constructing a globe of Earth. His globe depicted land distributed across both hemispheres, an early expression of geographic balance.
Antipodes: Places on Earth diametrically opposite one another, or the inhabitants imagined to live there. Terra Australis was often proposed as land for people living opposite northern regions.
Gerardus Mercator: A Flemish cartographer best known for the world map projection named after him. His maps helped establish a vast southern continent as a plausible feature of world geography.

Antarctica: Earth’s southernmost continent, centered on the South Pole and largely covered by ice. The real polar continent fulfilled part of the southern-land expectation, but not its imagined vast temperate extent.
