Knowra Territoriality Territoriality Territoriality is animal behavior in which an individual or group defends an area against members of its own or other species. The defended space can provide access to food, mates, nesting sites, or shelter.
Territory marking : The deposition of chemical or physical signals that indicate an animal’s presence or territorial claim. Scent, scratches, and other marks can advertise ownership without a direct encounter.
Animal behavior : The observable actions of animals and the processes that produce them. Territoriality is one pattern of behavior shaped by an animal’s surroundings and social life.
Breeding territory : An area defended primarily to secure mating opportunities, nesting sites, or resources needed to raise offspring. Some animals defend space chiefly during reproduction rather than throughout the year.

Resource holding potential : An animal’s ability to win or retain a resource during competition, based on traits such as size, strength, and condition. Contests can turn on whether an intruder or resident is more capable of holding the area.
Interspecific competition : Competition between different species for shared resources. Some animals defend areas against competitors belonging to other species.
