Tessitura

Tessitura is the range in which a vocal or instrumental part lies most comfortably and frequently. It describes where most of the notes fall, not the full range a performer can produce.

Vocal range: The span of pitches a singer can produce, from lowest to highest. Tessitura occupies only the portion of this full span used most comfortably.
Ambitus: The total pitch span covered by a musical part or melody. Ambitus measures the outer limits of a part rather than where its notes cluster.
Opera: A theatrical art form in which singers perform dramatic works with instrumental accompaniment. Opera roles are often characterized by the vocal tessitura they sustain.
Queen of the Night aria: An aria for the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute, known for its coloratura and high notes. Its conspicuous high writing illustrates the demands of a persistently elevated tessitura.
Musical register: A region of pitches distinguished by characteristic tone quality or production technique. A part’s tessitura can sit mainly within one register or cross between registers.
Vocal fatigue: Reduced vocal capacity or discomfort resulting from sustained or excessive voice use. An ill-suited tessitura can contribute to fatigue even when every note is reachable.
Voice type: A classification of singing voices based on characteristics such as range, weight, and timbre. Tessitura helps determine which voice types can sustain particular roles.
Nessun dorma: An aria for Calaf in Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot. Its sustained tenor writing makes tessitura a central performance demand.
Pitch (music): The perceived highness or lowness of a musical sound. Tessitura is described by the pitches that occur most often in a part.
Vocal range extension: A training goal of increasing the highest or lowest pitches a singer can produce. Extending endpoints does not necessarily make a demanding tessitura comfortable.
