Tetherball

Tetherball is a game in which opposing players strike a ball attached to a pole by a rope, aiming to wind the rope completely around the pole in their direction.

Angular momentum: A measure of rotational motion, determined by an object's rotation and its distribution of mass. Strikes change the ball’s rotational motion around the pole.
Tetherball pole: A vertical pole fitted with a cord and ball for playing tetherball. It anchors the rope and defines the axis around which the ball moves.
School playground: An outdoor area at a school equipped for children’s recreation. Tetherball is commonly installed as a durable, low-supervision playground game.
Four square: A playground ball game in which players occupy four squares and hit a ball between them. Four square uses a shared bouncing ball rather than a ball tethered to one pole.
Torque: The turning effect of a force, equal to force multiplied by its lever arm. A player’s off-center strike creates the rotation that winds the rope.
Rope: A strong, flexible length of fibers twisted or braided together. It connects the ball to the pole while allowing the ball to orbit.
Physical education: Education that develops physical competence, fitness, and understanding of movement. Tetherball can be used to practice coordination, timing, and movement.
Swingball: A racket game in which players hit a tethered ball around a pole. Swingball shares tethered motion but uses rackets and often a different scoring format.
Pendulum: A body suspended from a fixed point that swings under gravity or another restoring force. The tethered ball swings when a strike redirects its motion.
Strike (sports): A forceful hit delivered to an object in a sport or game. Players use strikes to reverse or sustain the ball’s direction.
