Tetradecane

Tetradecane is a straight-chain alkane with the molecular formula C₁₄H₃₀. Its fourteen carbon atoms form an unbranched chain.

Alkane: A hydrocarbon made only of carbon and hydrogen with single bonds between carbon atoms. Tetradecane belongs to this saturated-hydrocarbon family.
Covalent bond: A chemical bond formed when atoms share pairs of electrons. Tetradecane’s carbon skeleton and C–H bonds are covalent.
Diesel fuel: A liquid fuel used in compression-ignition engines, composed mainly of petroleum hydrocarbons. Tetradecane resembles components found in diesel-range hydrocarbon mixtures.
Tridecane: A straight-chain alkane containing thirteen carbon atoms, with formula C₁₃H₂₈. It has one fewer carbon atom and generally lower boiling point than tetradecane.
Molecular formula: A notation that specifies the number of each type of atom in a molecule. C₁₄H₃₀ records tetradecane’s carbon and hydrogen counts.
London dispersion force: An intermolecular attraction caused by temporary fluctuations in electron distributions. These attractions between tetradecane molecules contribute to its boiling point.
Cetane number: A measure of a diesel fuel’s readiness to ignite under compression. Tetradecane is used as a reference compound in cetane-number measurement.
Pentadecane: A straight-chain alkane containing fifteen carbon atoms, with formula C₁₅H₃₂. It extends the chain by one carbon and generally has higher boiling point.
Structural formula: A representation showing how atoms are connected within a molecule. It makes tetradecane’s unbranched carbon connectivity explicit.
Combustion: A chemical reaction in which a substance reacts with an oxidant, releasing heat. Complete combustion converts tetradecane into carbon dioxide and water.
