Tetryl

Tetryl is an aromatic nitramine explosive, also called 2,4,6-trinitrophenylmethylnitramine. Its high sensitivity and explosive power made it useful in detonators and booster charges.

Nitramine: An explosive compound containing a nitrogen–nitrogen bond in which one nitrogen bears a nitro group. Tetryl belongs to this chemical family, whose structure shapes its energetic properties.
Picric acid: A nitrated phenol formerly used as a high explosive and as a precursor to other energetic compounds. Earlier explosive practice provides context for tetryl’s place among aromatic nitro compounds.

RDX: A powerful cyclic nitramine explosive used in military and industrial formulations. RDX and related explosives displaced tetryl in many applications because they offered useful performance and handling properties.
