Thaddeus Stevens

Thaddeus Stevens (1792–1868) was a U.S. representative from Pennsylvania and a leading Radical Republican who championed abolition, Black civil rights, and congressional Reconstruction after the Civil War.

Charles Sumner: A Massachusetts senator and abolitionist who became a leading Radical Republican during and after the Civil War. Sumner shared Stevens’s push for emancipation and strong federal protection of Black civil rights.
Reconstruction Acts: Federal laws enacted in 1867 that divided the former Confederacy into military districts and set conditions for readmission. Stevens helped drive these laws, which placed Southern Reconstruction under congressional and military authority.
Danville, Vermont: A town in northeastern Vermont, where Thaddeus Stevens was born in 1792. Stevens’s New England upbringing preceded his political career in Pennsylvania.

Freedmen's Bureau: A U.S. federal agency established in 1865 to assist formerly enslaved people and displaced Southerners. Stevens supported federal aid and protections for freedpeople that the bureau attempted to provide.
Pennsylvania's 1838 Constitution: The Pennsylvania constitution adopted in 1838, which removed voting rights from Black men in the state. Stevens opposed the constitution’s racial restriction, an early test of his antislavery politics.
