Thai monarchy

The hereditary institution of kingship in Thailand, shaped by Buddhist kingship, dynastic succession, and changing constitutional arrangements. Its role in politics and public life has varied across periods.

Sukhothai Kingdom: A Thai kingdom centered at Sukhothai from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. Its later portrayal as an ideal early Thai kingdom shaped accounts of royal origins.
Constitutional monarchy: A system in which a monarch's powers are limited by a constitution and exercised within a wider political framework. Thailand's kingship has operated under constitutional arrangements since 1932.
