Than Shwe

Than Shwe is a Burmese military officer who led Myanmar’s ruling junta and served as head of state from 1992 to 2011.

Ne Win: A Burmese military officer who ruled Myanmar from 1962 to 1988 and established military-dominated socialist rule. Ne Win’s military regime created the political order Than Shwe inherited.
State Peace and Development Council: Myanmar’s military governing council, which ruled the country from 1997 to 2011. Than Shwe chaired this council, the junta’s principal governing body.
8888 Uprising: A mass pro-democracy uprising in Myanmar in 1988, suppressed by the military. The uprising’s suppression established the junta that Than Shwe later led.
