Knowra Thar Desert Thar Desert The Thar Desert is a large arid region spanning northwestern India and southeastern Pakistan. Also called the Great Indian Desert, it is one of the world’s most densely populated deserts.
Arid climate : A climate in which potential evaporation exceeds precipitation over the long term. Low and erratic rainfall defines the Thar’s water-limited environment.
Indira Gandhi Canal : A major canal system carrying water from the Sutlej and Beas rivers into western Rajasthan. It has expanded irrigation and settlement in parts of the Indian Thar.
Tharparkar : A district in Sindh, Pakistan, known for its desert landscape and predominantly rural population. It forms a major Pakistani portion of the Thar Desert.
Desertification : Land degradation in dry regions caused by climatic variation and human activity. Overgrazing, vegetation loss, and erosion can intensify degradation in parts of the Thar.
Cholistan Desert : A desert region in Punjab, Pakistan, forming the western extension of the Thar. It is often treated as the Pakistani continuation of the same desert system.
Monsoon : A seasonal reversal of winds that brings concentrated rainfall to parts of South Asia. Most of the Thar’s annual rain arrives with the summer monsoon.
Rainwater harvesting : The collection and storage of rainwater for later use. Traditional and modern harvesting helps communities bridge long dry periods.
Jaisalmer : A city in Rajasthan, India, situated within the Thar Desert. Its fort, settlements, and tourism make it a prominent urban center in the desert.
Groundwater depletion : A sustained decline in groundwater levels caused by withdrawal exceeding replenishment. Pumping for irrigation and settlements can strain the Thar’s limited water reserves.
Kalahari Desert : A large semi-arid sandy region in southern Africa. Unlike the Thar, it lies in the Southern Hemisphere and has distinct rainfall patterns.
