The Barber of Seville

An 1816 comic opera by Gioachino Rossini, based on Pierre Beaumarchais’s play about Count Almaviva’s courtship of Rosina with help from Figaro.

Rosina: A spirited young woman who outwits her guardian Bartolo to pursue Count Almaviva. Her disguise and messages turn Bartolo’s attempt to control her into comic misdirection.
Pierre Beaumarchais: An eighteenth-century French playwright whose Figaro plays satirized privilege and social convention. His 1775 comedy Le Barbier de Séville supplied the opera’s characters and plot.
Opera buffa: An Italian comic opera tradition featuring lively plots, character types, and ensemble finales. The Barber of Seville uses its conventions of comic servants, disguises, and fast-moving intrigue.
Teatro Argentina: An opera house in Rome where Rossini’s The Barber of Seville premiered in 1816. The premiere took place there on 20 February and was disrupted by mishaps and audience hostility.
