Cure

A cure is a treatment or intervention that eliminates a disease or condition, rather than merely relieving symptoms or slowing its course.

Palliative care: Medical care focused on relieving suffering and improving quality of life during serious illness. It eases illness burdens without requiring the disease itself to be eliminated.
Antimicrobial therapy: Treatment with drugs or other agents that kill microorganisms or inhibit their growth. It can cure infections by removing the organisms causing them.
Direct-acting antivirals for hepatitis C: Antiviral drugs that target hepatitis C proteins and can clear the virus from the body. They provide a well-established example of curing a chronic viral infection.
Pathogen: A biological agent that causes disease in a host. For infectious diseases, identifying the pathogen reveals a potential target for cure.
Orphan drug: A medicine developed to diagnose, prevent, or treat a rare disease. Policies supporting rare-disease treatments influence which potential cures receive investment.
Disease remission: A state in which signs and symptoms of a disease lessen or disappear, temporarily or persistently. Remission can resemble cure, but disease may remain or return.
Cancer immunotherapy: Cancer treatment that mobilizes or modifies immune activity against malignant cells. Some immune responses can eradicate cancer cells and produce lasting remission.
Antibiotics for bacterial infections: Drugs that kill bacteria or inhibit their growth to treat bacterial disease. Appropriate antibiotics can eliminate susceptible bacteria and resolve infection.
Etiology: The cause or set of causes of a disease or condition. A treatment can remove disease only if its relevant causes are understood and addressed.
Drug repurposing: Finding new medical uses for drugs already developed or approved for other purposes. Repurposing can shorten the path toward treatments for conditions lacking effective cures.
