The Fens

The Fens are a low-lying region of eastern England, historically dominated by wetlands and later extensively drained for agriculture. Its landscape is shaped by rivers, drainage channels, peat soils, and artificial embankments.

Fen drainage: The engineering and land-management work that removed water from the wetlands of the Fens. Drainage made large areas cultivable and created the region’s present network of channels.
Holocene: The current geological epoch, beginning about 11,700 years ago after the last ice age. The Fens’ wetlands formed within the changing climate and coastlines of this epoch.
Cornelius Vermuyden: A Dutch engineer who led major seventeenth-century drainage works in the English Fens. His projects transformed parts of the Bedford Level and provoked local resistance.
Fenland agriculture: The farming practiced on the drained, fertile soils of the English Fens. Reclaimed land became one of England’s most productive areas for arable crops and vegetables.
Ely: A cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, historically situated on an island within the Fens. Its elevated ground made Ely a refuge and center of settlement in the wetland landscape.
Bedford Level: A major drained tract of the Fens between the Ouse and Nene rivers. Its drainage schemes became a central, large-scale effort to reclaim fenland.
Fenland archaeology: The study of human activity preserved in the wetland landscapes and soils of the Fens. Waterlogged deposits preserve evidence of settlement before large-scale drainage.
Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford: An English nobleman who organized a consortium to drain parts of the Fens in the seventeenth century. His investment and authority helped launch the Bedford Level drainage scheme.
Peatland restoration: The recovery of damaged peatlands by restoring wet conditions and peat-forming vegetation. It offers an alternative to drainage, which causes peat loss and surface subsidence.
Wicken Fen: A nature reserve in Cambridgeshire that preserves one of the largest surviving areas of undrained fenland. It demonstrates the wildlife and wetland processes largely lost through drainage.
