Finger

A finger is one of the jointed digits attached to the palm, excluding the anatomically distinct thumb. In humans, each finger has bones, joints, tendons, nerves, and a sensitive fingertip.

Phalanx: A bone in a finger or toe; most fingers contain a proximal, middle, and distal phalanx. These bones form the finger’s segmented framework.
Tendon: A tough connective-tissue structure that attaches muscle to bone and transmits pulling force. Finger tendons transmit muscle force from the forearm and hand to the bones.
Opposition (anatomy): The movement that brings a digit across the palm toward another digit. Finger flexion and positioning meet the thumb’s opposition to form precise grips.
Thumb: The first digit of the hand, typically opposable to the other digits and anatomically distinct from the fingers. Its structure and opposability distinguish it from the four fingers.
Trigger finger: A condition in which a finger catches or locks during bending or straightening, often because a flexor tendon sheath is narrowed. It shows how impaired tendon gliding disrupts ordinary finger movement.
Metacarpophalangeal joint: The joint connecting a metacarpal bone to the proximal phalanx of a finger. It connects each finger to the hand and enables movement at the knuckle.
Pulley system of the finger: A series of fibrous bands that hold flexor tendons close to the finger bones. The pulleys prevent flexor tendons from bowstringing during finger bending.
Precision grip: A grip that holds an object between the thumb and one or more fingertips. Fingers stabilize and control small objects during fine manipulation.
Toe: A digit of the foot, usually one of five on each human foot. Toes share digit anatomy with fingers but serve different roles in the foot.
Mallet finger: An injury in which damage to the extensor tendon prevents active straightening of the fingertip joint. A small tendon injury can leave the distal finger bent.
