The Fronde

The Fronde was a series of French uprisings and civil conflicts from 1648 to 1653 that challenged royal authority during Louis XIV’s minority.

Fronde parlementaire: The first phase of the Fronde, when the Parlement of Paris resisted royal fiscal and administrative measures. Its opposition to new taxes and royal authority ignited the conflict in 1648.
Anne of Austria: Queen of France and regent for her son Louis XIV from 1643 until his majority. She and Mazarin directed the crown’s response to the Fronde.
Louis II de Bourbon, Prince of Condé: A French general and prince who commanded royal armies before leading a major aristocratic revolt. His changing allegiance made him the Fronde’s most formidable military figure.
