The Group Theatre

The Group Theatre was a New York theater company active from 1931 to 1941. It developed ensemble acting and staged socially engaged plays, many by American writers.

Stanislavski system: An approach to acting developed by Konstantin Stanislavski, emphasizing objectives, circumstances, and psychologically grounded performance. The company adapted Stanislavski’s methods into its actor-training practice.
House of Connelly: Paul Green’s 1931 play about a declining Southern family, produced as the Group Theatre’s inaugural production. Its opening-night production established the company’s commitment to new American drama.
Harold Clurman: An American theater director and critic who co-founded the Group Theatre and shaped its artistic program. He was the company’s chief artistic advocate and a leading director.

Workers' Laboratory Theatre: A New York workers’ theater group active in the late 1920s, associated with left-wing performance and training. Some future Group Theatre members encountered collective theater through this earlier organization.
American Method acting: A psychologically oriented American acting tradition shaped by Stanislavski’s ideas and studio training. The Group’s rehearsals and teachers helped transmit these methods to later performers.
