The Holocaust

The Holocaust was the systematic persecution and murder of six million Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War II. Nazi persecution also targeted other groups, including Roma and disabled people.

Nuremberg Laws: 1935 German laws that stripped Jews of citizenship and prohibited marriages between Jews and people classified as German. They translated Nazi racial ideology into legal exclusion before mass murder began.
Nazi Germany: The German state under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party from 1933 until its defeat in 1945. Its institutions and leaders directed persecution and genocide across Germany and occupied Europe.
Hannah Arendt: A German-Jewish political theorist whose work examined totalitarianism and the trial of Adolf Eichmann. Her account of Eichmann shaped debates about bureaucratic participation in Nazi crimes.
Warsaw Ghetto: The largest Jewish ghetto established by Nazi Germany, in occupied Warsaw, Poland. Its confinement, deportations, and armed resistance show several stages of persecution in one place.
Nuremberg trials: A series of postwar trials, including the International Military Tribunal, prosecuting major Nazi leaders and other perpetrators. They established public records of Nazi crimes and advanced individual accountability under international law.
Kristallnacht: A coordinated anti-Jewish pogrom across Nazi Germany and Austria on November 9–10, 1938. The pogrom escalated public violence and accelerated Jewish emigration and dispossession.
Nazi racial ideology: A pseudoscientific hierarchy that ranked people by supposed race and promoted German racial supremacy. It cast Jews as an existential enemy and helped justify escalating anti-Jewish policies.
Raoul Wallenberg: A Swedish diplomat who issued protective documents and organized safe houses for Jews in Budapest in 1944. His rescue efforts helped thousands of Hungarian Jews survive deportation and persecution.
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising: An armed revolt by Jewish resistance groups against Nazi forces in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943. The uprising was a major act of resistance during the liquidation of the ghetto.
Displaced persons camps: Postwar camps that housed refugees and people unable to return to their homes, including Holocaust survivors. Liberation did not end survivors' displacement or the search for surviving relatives.
