Mask

A covering worn over part or all of the face, used for protection, disguise, performance, or ritual.

Respirator: A device worn over the nose and mouth to reduce inhalation of airborne hazards. Respirators are masks designed chiefly to filter harmful particles or gases.
Anonymity: The condition of being unidentified or unidentifiable within a particular setting. A mask can conceal a wearer’s identity while leaving actions visible.
Commedia dell'arte: An Italian theatrical tradition built around improvised performances and recurring stock characters. Its half-masks helped establish recognizable characters such as Arlecchino.
Veil: A piece of fabric worn over or around the head or face, often for concealment or custom. A veil conceals or frames the face without necessarily becoming a shaped face covering.
Mask-making: The design and construction of coverings shaped to be worn over the face. Materials and construction determine a mask’s fit, durability, and visual effect.
Theatre mask: A face covering used in performance to represent a character, emotion, or role. Theatre masks make a performer’s assumed character visible to an audience.
Persona: A social identity or character presented by a person to others. Wearing a mask can make an assumed persona literal and public.
Venetian mask: A mask associated with the costume and festival traditions of Venice, Italy. Venetian masks became emblematic of masquerade and carnival culture.
Makeup: Cosmetic substances applied to the face or body to alter or emphasize appearance. Makeup changes the visible face without placing a covering over it.
Papier-mâché: A lightweight material made by layering paper with adhesive or pulp. Papier-mâché is a common material for inexpensive, sculpted masks.
