The Protectorate

The Protectorate was the period from 1653 to 1659 when England, Scotland, and Ireland were governed as a republic under Oliver Cromwell and briefly his son Richard.

Instrument of Government: England's written constitution of 1653 established the Lord Protector, a Council of State, and regular parliaments. It defined Cromwell's powers and the institutions intended to govern the republic.
English Civil War: A series of armed conflicts from 1642 to 1651 between forces loyal to Charles I and his opponents. The war overturned royal authority and created the political conditions for republican rule.
Oliver Cromwell: An English military and political leader who served as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658. His authority and choices defined the Protectorate's political character.
English Restoration: The return of the English monarchy under Charles II in 1660 after the republican governments collapsed. It ended the Protectorate and reversed its republican settlement.
Monarchy: A system of government headed by a monarch, usually holding office by hereditary succession. The Protectorate rejected a king while retaining a powerful individual head of state.
Lord Protector: The head of state under the Protectorate, holding executive authority under the Instrument of Government. Cromwell and then Richard held this office instead of the Crown.
Rump Parliament: The remnant of the Long Parliament that governed after Pride's Purge and the execution of Charles I. Its inability to settle a lasting constitution helped prompt the Protectorate.
Richard Cromwell: Oliver Cromwell's son, who became Lord Protector in 1658 and resigned in 1659. His short rule exposed the regime's dependence on Oliver's personal authority.
Stuart Restoration: The restoration of the Stuart monarchy in England, Scotland, and Ireland under Charles II in 1660. The Protectorate's fall formed the immediate prelude to Stuart rule across the three kingdoms.
Parliamentary republic: A republic in which an elected parliament and a government responsible to it exercise political authority. The Protectorate's executive was not consistently accountable to a freely functioning Parliament.
