The Tale of Igor's Campaign

An anonymous Old East Slavic epic poem recounting Prince Igor Sviatoslavich’s failed campaign against the Cumans in 1185. Its lyrical account combines a military narrative with appeals for unity among the Rus' princes.

Igor Sviatoslavich: A prince of Novgorod-Seversk who led a campaign against the Cumans in 1185. His defeat and capture anchor the poem’s narrative.
Epic poetry: A long narrative poem that recounts consequential deeds through elevated language and a broad social or historical setting. The poem adapts epic scale to a specific defeat and a call for political solidarity.
