The Voice

The Voice is an international television singing-competition franchise in which performers compete under celebrity coaches. Its signature blind auditions have coaches select singers without seeing them.

Blind audition: An audition in which judges evaluate a performer without seeing them. Coaches select singers by listening before turning their chairs to reveal themselves.
The Voice of Holland: The Dutch singing-competition television series that premiered in 2010 and originated The Voice franchise. It introduced the franchise’s format before international adaptations began.
Christina Aguilera: An American singer who served as a coach on the first seasons of The Voice in the United States. Her early coaching helped define the American edition’s celebrity panel.
The X Factor: An international singing-competition franchise created by Simon Cowell, featuring auditions, judges, and contestant categories. Unlike The Voice’s blind first auditions, judges initially assess contestants face-to-face.
Red chair: A swiveling chair used by a coach to face a performer after choosing them. The chair turn makes a coach’s selection visible during the blind auditions.
John de Mol: A Dutch television producer and entrepreneur who co-created The Voice format. His production company developed the original series and licensed its format internationally.
Blake Shelton: An American country singer and a long-running coach on the American version of The Voice. His many seasons made him one of the franchise’s most recognizable coaches.
American Idol: An American singing-competition television series in which contestants audition before judges and compete for audience votes. Its audition process foregrounds judges’ visible reactions rather than blind chair turns.
Battle round: A competition round in which contestants face off, often performing the same song. Coaches narrow their teams by pairing singers in head-to-head performances.
Talpa Network: A Dutch media company founded by television producer John de Mol. Talpa developed and distributes the format behind The Voice adaptations.
