Thebaine

Thebaine is a naturally occurring opium alkaloid used mainly as a starting material for semisynthetic opioids and other pharmaceuticals. Unlike morphine, it has stimulant properties and is not used as a medicine itself.

Oxycodone: A semisynthetic opioid analgesic used to treat moderate to severe pain. Thebaine is a major starting material in oxycodone manufacture.
Opium alkaloid: A nitrogen-containing natural compound found in opium poppy latex. Thebaine belongs to this family of compounds produced by the poppy.
Papaver bracteatum: A poppy species whose roots and other tissues can produce thebaine. It has been investigated as an alternative source of thebaine to opium poppy.
International Narcotics Control Board: A United Nations body that monitors implementation of international drug control treaties. It tracks international trade in thebaine as a controlled drug precursor.
Papaverine: An opium alkaloid that relaxes smooth muscle and is not an opioid analgesic. It occurs in the same plant but acts through a different pharmacological pathway.
Buprenorphine: A semisynthetic opioid used to treat opioid use disorder and pain. Its production can begin with thebaine-derived intermediates.
Benzylisoquinoline alkaloid: A broad family of plant alkaloids built from benzylisoquinoline-derived structures. Thebaine’s biosynthesis places it within this larger alkaloid family.
Opium: The dried latex of the opium poppy, containing a mixture of alkaloids. Thebaine is one of the minor alkaloids present in opium.
Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs: A 1961 international treaty that establishes controls on narcotic drugs and their trade. The treaty places thebaine under international control.
Noscapine: A non-opioid opium alkaloid used chiefly as a cough suppressant. Its presence in opium contrasts with thebaine’s role as a pharmaceutical precursor.
