Theodor Boveri

Theodor Boveri (1862–1915) was a German zoologist whose experiments with sea urchin embryos helped show that chromosomes carry distinct hereditary information and are necessary for normal development.

Chromosome theory of inheritance: The theory that genes are carried on chromosomes, which segregate and assort during reproduction. Boveri’s evidence helped establish chromosomes as carriers of distinct hereditary factors.
Sea urchin embryology: The study of fertilization and early development in sea urchins, widely used as experimental models. Boveri used sea urchin eggs to investigate how chromosomes guide development.
Boveri–Sutton chromosome theory: The early twentieth-century proposal that Mendelian hereditary factors reside on chromosomes. Boveri’s experimental findings converged with Walter Sutton’s work on chromosome behavior.
University of Munich: A German research university founded in 1472 and based in Munich since 1826. Boveri studied zoology there and worked in the research tradition of Carl von Kupffer.
Aneuploidy: A condition in which a cell has an abnormal number of individual chromosomes. Boveri connected abnormal chromosome complements with disrupted development and later proposed a link to cancer.
Chromosome: A DNA-protein structure that carries genetic information in cells. Boveri’s central question was how chromosomes transmit distinct hereditary instructions.
Sea urchin dispermy experiment: Boveri’s experiment in which two sperm fertilized one sea urchin egg, producing embryos with abnormal chromosome sets. The abnormal embryos showed that development depends on a balanced chromosome complement.
Carl von Kupffer: A German anatomist and histologist known for research on tissues and embryonic development. Kupffer supervised Boveri’s doctoral work in zoology.
Cancer: A group of diseases in which abnormal cells grow and spread without normal control. Boveri’s 1914 theory proposed that abnormal chromosome combinations could initiate cancer.
Mitosis: The process by which a eukaryotic cell divides its nucleus into two genetically similar nuclei. Boveri examined how chromosome distribution during cell division affects the embryo’s cells.
