Théodore Géricault

Théodore Géricault (1791–1824) was a French Romantic painter and lithographer whose dramatic, physically intense art challenged academic conventions. His best-known painting is The Raft of the Medusa.

The Raft of the Medusa: A monumental 1818–1819 painting depicting survivors of the 1816 shipwreck of the French frigate Méduse. Its shipwreck scene turned a contemporary political scandal into Géricault’s defining work.
Pierre-Narcisse Guérin: A French neoclassical painter who taught Géricault in Paris. Géricault trained in Guérin’s studio while developing a forceful alternative to neoclassical restraint.
