Theology

Theology is the systematic study of God, the divine, and religious beliefs and doctrines. It examines religious claims through interpretation, argument, and reflection.

Revelation: The disclosure of divine truth or presence to human beings. Theology often treats revelation as a primary source of claims about God.
Hermeneutics: The theory and practice of interpreting texts, actions, and other expressions of meaning. Hermeneutics explains how theologians interpret scripture and tradition across contexts.
Natural theology: The study of claims about God through reason and observation, apart from special revelation. It shows how theology can argue from nature and reason rather than scripture alone.
Moral theology: The study of moral life and action in light of religious beliefs and teachings. It applies theological claims to questions of right conduct and human flourishing.
Christian theology: The study and systematic interpretation of beliefs concerning God and the Christian tradition. It is a major tradition with distinctive doctrines, sources, and historical debates.
Scriptural exegesis: The critical interpretation of a text’s meaning, language, and historical context. Exegesis is a principal method for deriving and assessing doctrines from sacred texts.
Systematic theology: The organized formulation of doctrines and their relations within a religious tradition. It is the clearest example of theology arranging beliefs into a coherent account.
Revealed theology: The study of divine truths understood to be disclosed through revelation. It contrasts with approaches that rely chiefly on unaided reason.
Liberation theology: A theological movement that interprets religious faith through the struggle against oppression. It connects doctrines about God with social analysis and political action.
Islamic theology: The systematic study of God and doctrine within Islamic intellectual traditions. Its debates over divine attributes, revelation, and human action shaped a major theological tradition.
