Theory of Forms

Plato’s view that abstract, unchanging Forms are more fundamental than particular things, which resemble or participate in them. Forms ground what things are and make knowledge of them possible.

Form: In Plato’s philosophy, an abstract, unchanging reality that particular things resemble or participate in. Forms are the theory’s central entities, such as Beauty itself or Justice itself.
Allegory of the Cave: Plato’s image of prisoners mistaking shadows for reality until one turns toward the light outside. The cave dramatizes the ascent from appearances toward knowledge of intelligible realities.
Phaedo: Plato’s dialogue depicting Socrates’ final hours and arguments about the soul’s immortality. Its arguments invoke Equal itself to explain how people judge imperfect equal things.
Aristotle's Theory of Universals: Aristotle’s view that universals are found in particular things rather than existing separately as Platonic Forms. Aristotle rejects a separate realm of Forms and locates form within concrete substances.
Participation: A relation by which a particular thing shares in or depends on a Form. It names Plato’s account of how changing particulars relate to their stable Forms.
Analogy of the Sun: Plato’s comparison of the Good to the sun, which enables sight and gives visible things life. It presents the Good as the source of intelligibility, as the sun is of visibility.
Symposium: Plato’s dialogue on love, culminating in Diotima’s account of ascent toward Beauty itself. Diotima describes Beauty as a stable reality beyond beautiful bodies and customs.
Problem of Universals: The philosophical dispute over whether properties and kinds exist independently of their particular instances. The Theory of Forms is one influential answer to this enduring metaphysical question.
Particular: An individual, concrete thing distinguished from a general kind or universal. Particulars change and multiply, unlike the Forms they are said to resemble or share.
Divided Line: Plato’s hierarchy of cognition, from images and visible objects to mathematical thought and understanding of Forms. It maps the levels of knowledge and reality associated with the theory.
